Welcome to the Whale Room

The Whale Room is spacious and bright, yet homely and welcoming. It's designed for 3-5 year olds and each day is planned around a mixture of adult- and child-led activities. Your child's key worker will ensure that their individual needs are catered-for during weekly planning to ensure they make the best possible progress.

At this stage the main focus is on developing children's progress in the 'specific' areas of learning of the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) (see Early Years Curriculum - 3-5 Year Olds) to ensure that they become 'school ready'.

We work with St George's, St Nicholas Priory and other local primary schools to help ease the transition for children. School staff are invited into the nursery to get to know them, and the children will have the opportunity to spend time in their new school with parents and nursery staff.

Like all our nurseries, Calthorpe is based on free flow play principles, with resources and equipment laid out for children to be able to 'dip in and dip out' as they choose, encouraging greater independence and the freedom to make choices. This allows children to explore and develop at their own individual pace; no child is pressured or rushed.

Inside tables are laid out for drawing, stencilling and painting or modelling activities, with games and toys set up for play. There are areas for imaginary play and a delightful 'cosy corner' for reading, napping or just sitting quietly.

Toddlers have bags of energy, are keen to try out new skills and need lots of exercise. We encourage them to get outdoors as much as possible, whatever the weather! Staff make sure that children become used to 'dressing for the weather', with sun hats and sun cream or waterproofs and wellies to hand as required.

Key Person

Your child will be assigned a key person, who will help to ensure that your child's learning and care is tailored to meet his/her individual needs.

He/she will work with you to ensure that your child makes the best progress possible. He/she will keep you informed of your child's progress, let you know if there any concerns and give you ideas to support their learning at home.

In return you will be invited to share any achievements or milestones you may have observed at home.

Learning Journeys

All the time the children are playing and learning under our guidance, we will be observing their progress and taking photos of their achievements.

These are recorded in an online 'learning journal' (Tapestry) and you will be given an individual login to be able to access your child's journal whenever you like.

Healthy Snack

Mid session the children are invited to sit down for a healthy snack. We use this time to introduce new foods and tastes, as well as bringing out old favourites (see Health & Nutrition).

Snacks include healthy nibbles and bites, including dried and fresh fruits, raw vegetables, cheese, ham, pizza. Milk is served with the snack. Please let us know if your child has any known food allergies.

Children are also encouraged to drink water at other times during the session.
