Volunteers Week - Reception

I wanted to find something to fill my time while I was looking for employment ...

Denise Simmonds joined GYCT as a Reception Assistant Volunteer, providing cover to the Priory Centre Receptionists and other frontline services as needed. Since then her role has developed to include providing administrative support for the Trust.

"I wanted to find something to fill my time while I was looking for employment. I also hoped to gain experience through providing administrative support, as well as working in a different setting", says Denise.

"Most of all I wanted the opportunity to meet and help new people and a busy reception is the ideal setting!"

The Priory Centre provides a 'community hub' for people in Great Yarmouth. There is a daily programme of groups and activities at the Centre, which are open to everyone. These range from singing and arts & crafts, to a three times weekly community lunch, friendship club and bowls, through to full body workouts and slimming clubs.

As its name suggests the Priory was originally built in the 12th century as a Benedictine Monastery for the monks that worked in St Nicholas Minster Church. Its historic architecture and central location make it an ideal venue for meetings, training and functions and it has a variety of rooms for hire to local businesses and community organisations, as well as local residents.

Denise's role as a Volunteer Assistant in the busy Priory Centre Reception provides really good experience of working in a frontline role, not only meeting and greeting visitors to the groups and activities, but handling telephone enquiries and room hire bookings.

"I have made a great bunch of new friends and my confidence has grown. I didn’t expect to enjoy volunteering, but I find that I look forward to coming in to help out and I love the people I work with. Part of my role is meeting and greeting new people to the Priory Centre, which gets better all the time, and I have gained new interests too. I find the Priory Centre a very calming and friendly environment, which makes it a stress free place to work."

Finally Denise adds: "I enjoy everything about this kind of voluntary work and would advise anyone wishing to try it to go ahead and give it a go!"
